Everest Base Camp & Gokyo Lakes Trek via Cho La Pass
Is the Everest Base Camp & Gokyo Lakes trek harder than the standard EBC route?
Yes. Crossing Cho La Pass makes this itinerary more demanding than the classic Everest Base Camp trek. It involves higher altitude, longer walking days, and sections of rocky and icy terrain. Good fitness and previous trekking experience are strongly recommended.
Do I need previous mountaineering experience?
No technical climbing is required. However, trekkers should be comfortable walking at altitude and capable of sustained effort over multiple days.
How fit do I need to be?
You should be able to hike 6–8 hours per day with regular uphill and downhill sections. Cardiovascular fitness, leg strength, and stamina are important.
What is the highest point of the trek?
The highest sleeping elevation is Gorak Shep (5,164 m).
The highest walking points are:
- Kala Patthar – 5,545 m
- Cho La Pass – 5,330 m
- Gokyo Ri – 5,357 m
Is altitude sickness a risk?
Yes. Any trek above 3,000 m carries altitude risk.
The itinerary is designed with proper acclimatization days to reduce danger, and guides monitor trekkers closely.
Descending is always the best treatment.
When is the best time to go?
The best seasons are:
✔ Spring (March–May)
✔ Autumn (September–November)
These months offer stable weather, better visibility, and higher success rates for crossing the pass.
Are the Cho La Pass conditions technical?
The pass can involve snow, loose rock, and sometimes icy sections depending on the season. It is physically demanding but manageable with experienced guides.
Microspikes or crampons may be required in certain conditions.
Where do we stay during the trek?
You stay in mountain teahouses (lodges). Rooms are simple, clean, and comfortable considering the altitude. Bathrooms are usually shared.
Higher up, facilities become more basic.
Is Wi-Fi and charging available?
Yes in many villages, but it becomes expensive and unreliable at higher altitude. Bring a power bank.
What permits are required?
The trek requires:
- Sagarmatha National Park Permit
- Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Permit
These are arranged by the company.
How heavy is my backpack?
You carry a daypack with personal essentials (water, layers, snacks, camera).
Porters carry the main duffel (usually up to 10–12 kg per person).
What happens if flights to Lukla are delayed?
Weather can affect flights. Extra buffer days are strongly recommended. Our team assists with rescheduling and alternatives if required.
Can beginners do this trek?
Strong beginners with good fitness can complete it, but prior trekking experience at altitude makes the journey more enjoyable.
Why combine EBC with Gokyo Lakes?
Because you see more of the Everest region.
Instead of walking the same path back, you explore glaciers, remote valleys, and gain additional summit viewpoints. It is considered the most complete Everest trek.
Is travel insurance mandatory?
Yes. Insurance must cover:
✔ high-altitude trekking
✔ emergency helicopter evacuation
✔ medical treatment
Without this, participation is not allowed.
Who will guide the trek?
The trek is led by experienced, licensed mountain guides with deep knowledge of altitude safety, terrain, and local culture.
