Pur Bahadur Gurung, fondly known as Yukta, is a celebrated figure in the world of mountaineering, whose name resonates with exceptional achievements and unparalleled dedication. Hailing from the picturesque village of Dharche-4, Gorkha, Nepal, Yukta has etched his name among the elite climbers with his astounding feats on the highest and most challenging peaks on Earth.
Yukta discovered his passion for the mountains early in life. His journey began with foundational training, such as Trekking Guide Training and Basic Mountaineering Training in 2009. Over the years, he expanded his skillset through advanced courses, including High Mountain Rescue Training and the Aspirant Guide Course, emphasizing his commitment to both professional growth and safety in high-altitude environments. He is also a member of the Nepal National Mountain Guide Association (NNMGA).
Yukta’s climbing résumé boasts numerous summits of iconic peaks, including seven ascents of Mt. Everest, two successful climbs of K2, and numerous other 8000-meter giants like Kanchenjunga, Makalu, Lhotse, and Annapurna. Among his most remarkable accomplishments is setting a record by summiting four 8000-meter peaks within 12 days, proof of his stamina and skill. Pur Bahadur Gurung (Yukta), along with Prakash Gurung, is the first to achieve the ascent of Khumjungar Peak, standing at 6,757 meters.
Yukta is on a mission to summit all 14 of the world’s 8000-meter peaks, having successfully climbed 11 so far. He has participated in numerous rescue operations, including the recovery of Nelson Hillary’s body on Manaslu and the rescue of Captain Dependra Singh Khatri near the Hillary Step on Everest. He has also collaborated with renowned figures like Jimmy Chin and Andres on National Geographic projects.
In addition to personal achievements, Yukta has been a pillar of guidance and inspiration in the climbing community. With years of experience as a trekking and climbing guide, he has worked with esteemed organizations, including Churen Himal Trek, Kaitu Expedition, and Elite Expedition. His role extends beyond guiding; Yukta actively contributes to the development of mountaineering through teaching, project management, and community involvement, notably with the Mission Community Help Foundation.
Fluent in multiple languages, including Nepali, Hindi, English, French, and Chinese, Yukta is adept at fostering connections across cultures. His dedication to promoting Nepal’s rich mountaineering heritage is further reflected in his extensive experience guiding climbers from diverse backgrounds.
Yukta’s profound respect for the mountains is rooted in his Buddhist upbringing, instilling a deep sense of humility and responsibility toward nature. His interests in rock climbing, mountain biking, kayaking, and photography complement his climbing career, reflecting his adventurous spirit and creative outlook.
